About the Session

As organizations pursue digital transformation and adopt new technologies to remain competitive, program and project managers, systems engineers, and suppliers are all critical to success — alongside a co-created program management and implementation plan.

In complex project and program environments, successful delivery depends on strong collaboration between program managers and systems engineers. However, these disciplines often work with different terminology, priorities, processes, and measures of success. This can lead to unclear roles, misalignment, communication gaps, rework, delays, and weaker program outcomes.

This session will provide an overview of the PM-SE integration initiative jointly led by the INCOSE PM-SE Working Group, the PMI Washington DC Chapter, and the DSM Community. It will also explore the System Architecture Integration Lab (SAIL) approach to successfully integrating DSM within an organization’s technology ecosystem in direct support of PM-SE integration.

What the Session Covers

  • The real cost of PM-SE misalignment in complex programs: unclear roles, communication gaps, rework, and delays
  • An overview of the joint PM-SE integration initiative across INCOSE, PMI Washington DC, and the DSM Community
  • The System Architecture Integration Lab (SAIL) approach to PM-SE integration
  • How DSM methods can be integrated into an organization’s existing technology ecosystem
  • Practical frameworks for enabling stronger collaboration between systems engineers and program managers

About the INCOSE PM-SE Integration Working Group

The INCOSE PM-SE Integration Working Group was established in 2016 to address the persistent interface challenges between systems engineering and project/program management. The group has contributed to multiple editions of the SE Handbook, collaborated directly with the Project Management Institute (PMI), and presented at INCOSE International Symposia and Workshops across five continents.

It received the INCOSE Working Group Collaboration Award in both 2022 and 2023 — recognition for sustained impact on the systems engineering community and its cross-disciplinary partnerships.
